Sophomores Destiny Hale and Hanna Shakarov won the 2025 ACC Debate Championship by defeating Southern Methodist University in the tournament鈥檚 final round in Washington, D.C. Hale, a computer science major, was voted the tournament鈥檚 top speaker. Shakarov, a business and enterprise management major, was voted the second overall speaker. Wake Forest was undefeated in the preliminary debates with wins over UNC, Florida State, Miami and Notre Dame.

We are proud to recognize the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients, Barbee Oakes (鈥80, MA 鈥81) and Syd Kitson (鈥81).
Barbee Oakes spent her career championing diversity and inclusion, breaking barriers and creating a sense of belonging for generations of students.
Syd Kitson imagined and built America鈥檚 first solar-powered town while preserving 73,000 acres of old-growth forest in Florida.
Their work exemplifies the spirit of #ProHumanitate. Congratulations!
